What The Heck is the Community Garden doing now?
For those of you who have been part of this community for some time, you may have noticed that our garden has experienced many transformations. Indeed, there have been periods when the garden lay quiet for extended stretches. However, over the past two summers (five growing seasons), several of us have dedicated ourselves to nurturing its growth. We believe that working in the soil, witnessing seeds sprout, and yes, observing bees sipping nectar not only cultivates sustenance but also fosters a profound sense of purpose and contentment. Our vision for this garden is to create a sanctuary—a space for creativity, healing, and, of course, a thriving environment for all the delicious produce we love to enjoy. When we first embarked on this journey, it was just four women with limited knowledge of large-scale gardening practices. We affectionately referred to ourselves as the "Surprised Gardeners," reflecting both our early successes and our unexpected challenges (like thriving blackberries in volcanic soil and cucumbers growing instead of the intended pumpkins). We immersed ourselves in literature, seeking evidence-based best practices. Our research led us around the globe via the internet, ultimately guiding us to regenerative, soil-based, organic, and sustainable gardening practices. These concepts were new to us, and in future blog posts, we will delve into each of these in detail, explaining the rationale behind our methods. We reached out to the University of Utah for assistance, and after a site visit, they were impressed enough to collect and test our soil, providing us with a clear starting point. We visited other thriving gardens that shared our ideals to learn from their successes, and we networked with beekeepers, permaculture experts, flower farmers, and compost specialists. Our commitment to learning was relentless, spanning 24 months and five growing seasons.Today, we proudly maintain 38 grow boxes that yield abundant harvests. Our row crops include corn, and soon we will add potatoes, artichokes, and asparagus. We have over 60 grapevines, 20 blackberry bushes, 6 raspberry bushes, and 100 strawberry plants, along with rows of pumpkins and melons, complemented by a flourishing kitchen and medicinal herb garden and a large fruit orchard. To support our flowering fruit trees, we constructed a "bee palace" for three hives, accompanied by a large pollinator garden to sustain them. Our dedication to this land and our gardening practices has become deeply ingrained in our hearts and souls, drawing our families to witness the thriving life in our desert environment and to discover the source of our joy.We have embraced our roles as stewards of this land and are eternally grateful for the experience. Each day brings new surprises and gifts from the garden, and we cherish each moment. That said, our journey is just beginning. We have countless ideas—what we affectionately call our "garden dreams." We invite you to join us, learn alongside us, laugh with us, and enjoy the rewards of growing organic, and oh so tasty, fresh fruit and vegetables for your entire family.
